Shutter Island continued to draw in the punters for a second weekend across the pond, beating out newcomers like Kevin Smith’s Cop Out and Breck Eisner’s The Crazies to take the top spot with $22.2 million.
But there was good news for Smith: his cop comedy scored more in one weekend ($18.5 million) than any of his previous work and boding well for a solid run, assuming the heavily mixed reviews and word of mouth don’t shoot the film down. The Crazies, meanwhile, did decent business, opening to $16.5 million.
Avatar, on what is likely to be its last high earning weekend (given that Alice In Wonderland arrives next week to take over a lot of the 3D screens), made $14 million for fourth place, and even with the new screen competition, we shouldn’t count out the Na’vi just yet. The top five was rounded out by Percy Jackson And The Olympians, which appears unlikely to do Potter-sized business but is performing decently, adding $9.8 million to its $71.2 million haul to date.
The rest of the top 10 was taken up with star-stuffed rom com Valentine’s Day, tearjerker Dear John, horror remake The Wolfman, kid ‘comedy’ **Tooth Fairy **and Oscar hopeful Crazy Heart, which has seen its fortunes helped by the award talk for Jeff Bridges.
