Shrek Leads US Box Office Weekend

**Update 31/05/10: **In the final reckoning, we totally called it like Colbert. While **Shrek Forever After **sat pretty (pretty ugly, heh, heh) atop the charts with $55 million total, Prince Of Persia squeaked ahead of Sex And The City 2 to steal second place with $31.1m to the ladies' $30.4m. It's victory for Jake Gyllenhaal's abs and his magic dagger (not a euphemism), folks.

In one of those rare occurrences where holidays line up in the UK and US – expect Roland Emmerich to make a film about how the combination causes the Earth to explode in a few years’ time – it’s Memorial Day weekend in the States and while news is thin on the ground (except for, er, this** Hobbit** bombshell), it also means that the box office results aren’t technically final for an extra day, since Monday also counts. Still,** Shrek Forever After** has a commanding lead as of Sunday, holding on to the top spot for a second week with $43.3 million, a drop of just 38%.

That meant new arrivals Sex And The City 2 (which was clearly still popular despite poisonously bad reviews) and **Prince Of Persia **had to make do with second and third place. The ladies of the City sequel took in $32.1 million, while Jake Gyllenhaal’s Prince rustled up $30.1 million.

**Iron Man 2 **slipped down to fourth place, earning $16 million, while Robin Hood rounded out the top five with $10.3 million.

Elsewhere, it was a mixture of romantic comedy/drama (Letters To Juliet was sixth with $5.9 million, while** Just Wright** dropped to seventh with $2.2 million), comedy (**Date Night **at eighth with $1.7 million), raunchy action comedy (MacGruber went skidding off down the charts to ninth and $1.4 million) and animated adventures (How To Train Your Dragon took the Shrek/3D screen loss hit and landed in 10th place with $1 million).

Given the weekend, the full estimates won’t be known until tomorrow, so the top could change, though we expect any shifting to happen between the second and third place spots, if at all. For the entire chart, go check out Box Office Mojo.
