The last time writer/directorDavid Ayer put Shia LaBeouf on screen, it was for the unflinching war drama Fury. Now he's back in the sort of territory he explored in End Of Watch, Street Kings and Harsh Times – and LaBeouf is along for the ride. Find the first trailer for The Tax Collector below.

LaBeouf here plays Creeper, a "tax collector" working for a crime lord named Wizard, who spends his days gathering his boss's cut of local gangs illicit dealings. He hits the streets with new comrade David (Bobby Soto) and we get to experience his various violent methods of keeping control. But then Wizard's old rival returns to Los Angeles from Mexico, sparking conflict – and David has to protect the one thing that matters to him most: his family.

This certainly feels like Ayer back in his wheelhouse, after the likes of Suicide Squad and Bright. The Tax Collector is taking aim at a 7 August release in cinemas, digital and on demand in the US, but has yet to confirm a UK date.
