Actor Martin Sheen spent the first moment of the new millennium a police truck after being arrested while protesting against nuclear weapons. The legendary actor joined other placard-waving protesters outside the nuclear weapons plant in Mercury, Nevada, in his ongoing fight for a nuclear-free world. Just days before his stance, Sheen told reporters at the nominations for the Golden Globes, which he hosted, that he hoped he would be booked to bring light to the cause. "I can't think of more an important issue than ridding the world of nuclear weapons," he said. "We have just begun building 140 weapons for submarines and the future looks foreclosed if we continue this. Our future belongs to our children and our hopes. We don't have any business jeopardising our humanity or sanity with these weapons." Sheen was arrested for trespassing, but not charged. This follows on the back of another arrest when he stormed a nuclear factory in New Mexico to bring attention to the plutonium-producing plant.
