For a while now, the status of Marvel’s next Avengers movie has been in flux. Back in July 2022, Kevin Feige announced that the Multiverse Saga would offer up two major hero team-up movies: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars. But in the wake of underperforming Phase 4 movies, and Jonathan Majors being dropped as Kang after an assault conviction, the plan changed – The Kang Dynasty is no more, Shang-Chi’s Destin Daniel Cretton stepped down from directing to focus on Shang-Chi 2 instead, and little has moved since then.

Until now. Because, according to Deadline, Marvel is eyeing up Shawn Levy as the man to next assemble the Avengers on screen. The filmmaker is currently hard at work in the final stages of Deadpool & Wolverine, which is gearing up to be a real big box office win – and, as a result, Marvel Studios is said to be keen on Levy as a potential filmmaker for Avengers 5. Per the report, Levy has been handed the latest version of a screenplay by Michael Waldron (who previously penned Loki and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness), though the studio is also set to meet with other directors in the meantime. Still, Levy has the small matter of overseeing the final season of Stranger Things with the Duffer Brothers, and has a possible Star Wars movie in the works too.

Even though there’s a while to go until Marvel is ready to assemble the Avengers again – it has Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four to be getting on with first – it seems there’s still an effort to get a climactic event film in place and underway. And it’s a promising sign for Levy’s Deadpool sequel, set to bring Ryan Reynold’s Merc With A Mouth into the MCU at last. Stay tuned for more updates as we get them.
