He spends a lot of time these days ensuring kids don't get stuck in the Upside Down as one of the main producers and directors on Stranger Things, but Shawn Levy is still looking for movies to make. He's now teaming up with regular collaborators 20th Century Fox for a new sci-fi pic called Crater.
The script originated as an idea by VFX expert Rpin Suwannath, which then became a spec pitch by writer John J. Griffin. It's being described as a coming-of-age story with Stand By Me as a touchstone. This story, however, is set on a lunar mining colony and charts a boy growing up after the death of his father, and facing being permanently relocated to another planet.
Before that happens, he sets out on a quest with his four best friends to explore a mysterious crater. Levy will oversee development on the script before deciding whether he'll direct it for sure or just continue as a producer via his 21 Laps company.
