Sometimes when casting rumours emerge, everything works out: deals are struck, hands shook and ink hits paper. Other times, such as with recent indications that Uma Thurman would join action comedy American Ultra, events simply don’t go that way. So now we have Sharon Stone taking on the role instead.

American Ultra, which will find Project X's Nima Nourizadeh directing a Max Landis script, follows what happens when a small-town stoner called Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) discovers that he’s not quite the man he thinks he is. Happily living an unmotivated life with his girlfriend Phoebe, Mike suddenly learns that he’s not simply a joint-happy slacker; he is, in fact, a highly trained, sharp-shooting, fist-flinging sleeper.

Of course, upon learning that he’s essentially Bourne with a bong, Mike’s life is instantly in danger and he’s forced to summon all his sublimated skills to survive. Stone is set to play Victoria Lasseter, the woman behind the agent programme who decides to protect her asset. The main trio will receive able support from Walton Goggins, Tony Hale, John Leguizamo, Bill Pullman and Topher Grace. There’s no word on a release date either here or in the US, though it should be out next year.
