Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri* might have dominated much of the awards season discussion ahead of the Oscars, but on the night Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water swept ahead of Martin McDonagh’s latest. The Mexican director’s fantasy romance took Best Picture, while the film also bagged Best Director for del Toro, Best Score for Alexandre Desplat, and Best Production Design.

While picking up Best Picture, del Toro dedicated the award to young filmmakers across the world, adding: “A few weeks ago Steven Spielberg said, if you find yourself in the podium remember that you’re part of a legacy, part of a world of filmmakers, and be proud of it.”

There were few surprises in the majority of the categories, with Gary Oldman bagging Best Actor, Frances McDormand taking Best Actress, Allison Janney getting Best Supporting Actress, and Sam Rockwell taking Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele took home Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, while James Ivory won Best Adapted Screenplay for Call Me By Your Name. Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins finally won the Best Cinematography prize for the first time, on his 14th nomination — this time, for Blade Runner 2049.

Coco halted The Boss Baby’s crawl to the finish line in the Best Animated Film group, while Pixar’s film also took home Best Song for Remember Me.
