Roll out the red carpet, get the teary acceptance speeches ready, and for the love of god, somebody please check the envelopes. Hollywood’s biggest awards night, The Oscars, is on the horizon, and the nominations are now in for this year’s crop of top-tier films.
The 2018 ceremony is looking to be a good night for The Shape of Water, Dunkirk, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Guillermo Del Toro’s swooning inter-species romance has bagged 13 nods, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress for Sally Hawkins, Best Supporting Actor for Richard Jenkins, and Original Screenplay. Christopher Nolan’s war survival film has snagged him eight nominations, including his first ever Best Director nod, with Dunkirk up for eight categories overall. Meanwhile Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards has seven nominations, with Best Picture and Best Actress for Frances McDormand in the mix.
Faring exceptionally well as a genre film, Jordan Peele’s satirical horror-thriller Get Out made an impact in all the major categories — Peele himself is up for Best Director, the film has got a Best Picture nod, and Daniel Kaluuya is up for Best Actor. Blade Runner 2049 also came away with five awards, mostly in the technical categories, as did Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Greta Gerwig is in with a shot of Best Director this year, meaning it’s not a repeat of the Golden Globes’ “all-male nominees”, while Lady Bird is up for Best Picture as well as Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan. Darkest Hour has six nominations, including Best Actor for Gary Oldman, and one of three spots in the Make-up category for Oldman’s jaw-dropping transformation into Winston Churchill. Phantom Thread fared well with six nominations, including Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, Best Actor for Daniel Day Lewis in his alleged final ever screen role, and Jonny Greenwood’s score.
Former Oscar hopefuls who failed to pick up much recognition include Wonder Woman, The Disaster Artist, Molly’s Game, and All the Money in the World — though Christopher Plummer’s final-hour re-shoot performance in Ridley Scott’s thriller has earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
Otherwise notable is Logan’s appearance in Adapted Screenplay, The Boss Baby crawling into the Best Animated Feature category, and The Big Sick getting welcome recognition for its Original Screenplay.
