Jesse L Martin, who appears on TV’s Law & Order and will hit the UK’s big screens in Rent, has signed to play legendary singer Marvin Gaye.

Sexual Healing, named after Gaye’s best-known hit, will be an independent biopic drama written and directed by Lauren Goodman. The plot follows his final years, where he’s exiled himself to Europe after battling drugs. Record promoter Freddy Cousaert found him and rescued him, and helped him produce his comeback album Midnight Love. But Gaye’s story ends in tragedy, with his death at his father’s hands in 1984.
