A Sequel To The Meg Is In The Works

The Meg

The Meg might not have avoided a savaging by the critics, but it did go on to swim away with more than $527 million at the worldwide box office. Which is why you might not be too surprised to learn that a sequel is in very early development.

Speaking at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit in LA, executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying announced that a sequel is tentatively in the works. "That is definitely the plan," said Ying. “It’s still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time."

The original, of course, saw Jason Statham as marine rescue expert Jonas Taylor, who had to help save the crew of an underwater research station when they accidentally release a massive Megalodon shark, long thought extinct. You can guess the toothy rest. The film left clear water for a sequel, and given (spoiler alert!) Statham's survival, he may come back. And since it was based on a book by Steve Alten which has published sequels, there are places for the story to go. Not that the story is ever really the important bit.

No details were released and there's not even a writer (or writers) attached yet, with Warner Bros. still to officially give the nod. Chances are, though, there will be more giant shark action in our futures...
