Sequel To The Host Coming From China

You may remember The Host as the most batshit crazy monster ever to grace our cinema screens, or possibly as one of the best monsters ever to do so. The 2006 Korean film broke box-office records in the country and went on to huge success around the world - and now a sequel is on its way, but this time, from China.

Originally, the story concerned a pollution-created monster who rampaged through Seoul, resulting in a disease scare and government measures against the monster's victims as well as the creature itself. One humble family tried to rescue their daughter / granddaughter / niece who'd been snatched by the creature. This time, however, the story will concern a "calamity caused when people ignore a monster due to their desire for money".

While the last film was seen as critical of the South Korean authorities, this one is likely to have to tread carefully to avoid upsetting the Chinese powers that be, who are, y'know, sometimes given to overreaction.

The sequel will be directed by Ning Hao, the Chinese director of 2006's generally well-received Crazy Stone, who's currently working on a film called Silver Medalist. The hope is that it will succeed in opening up the Chinese box office to films that aren't just historical epics or martial arts dramas, putting the giant scary beastie among the genteel pigeons, if you will.
