Star Trek: Discovery Season 2

Production has been underway for a while on the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, and from the looks of the sizzle reel that debuted at this year's San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, it's looking to ramp up the fun, the adventure and the space-borne mystery. Thanks to the capricious whims of different distributors, UK readers can check out the Netflix version below, while those in the States should head lower down the page for the same video from CBS All Access.

Season 2 picks up the threads left dangling from the end of the first, when the Discovery (spoiler alert for those who are not yet caught up) met the USS Enterprise. Anson Mount's Captain Christopher Pike (who commanded the iconic Trek vessel before Captain Kirk used it to ignore the Prime Directive and romance alien ladies all over the galaxy) comes aboard to take command of the Discovery, noting that a strange, powerful new signal has been emanating from space.

And there's also a connection for Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who discovers that her adoptive brother Spock might somehow be linked to the new space oddity. While the panel for the show at the Con didn't reveal who will be playing Spock on the show, the team, including executive producer Alex Kurtzman did say that we'll meet the character this season. “We know we owe you a lot of answers about how this show connects to canon this season,” Kurtzman said, adding that answers will come, “just not the way that you expected.”

Also drawn from canon this time around is the original First Officer, or Number One of the Enterprise, played once by Majel Barrett for the unused pilot to 1966's Star Trek. She'll be brought to life on Discovery by Rebecca Romijn.

Finally, Kurtzman announced that the first part of his deal to develop spin-offs and other shows around Trek has borne fruit with Short Treks, shorter adventures focusing on specific characters. The miniseries episodes, running around 10-15 minutes long will initially feature Rainn Wilson's Harry Mudd (Wilson will direct and feature), Aldis Hodge as a man named Craft who finds himself the only human aboard an otherwise deserted ship. Others will dig into the backstory of Kelpian officer Saru (Doug Jones) and Tilly, played by Mary Wiseman.

Star Trek: Discovery returns early next year.
