American audiences disproved the theory that Scream 3 was a sequel too far by streaming to the cinema in droves this weekend. The total box office for the third, and possibly final, segment in Kevin Williamson's slasher fest was a gargantuan $35.2 million. The end result had Hollywood statisticians with their calculators out, coming up with facts such as Scream 3 being the most profitable opening for a Miramax film ever, and the biggest opening of any film in February - traditionally a dull month for US cinemas. Not only that, but it beat the previous Scream outing by $3 million.
