You can’t keep a good Ghostface down, can you? Earlier this year, the fifth Scream movie – confusingly titled Scream – brought back the iconic horror mask for a new generation, delivering a legacy sequel (or, a ‘requel’, to use the film’s own parlance) that brought in a new, young cast while including the original characters. It was a box office success – nearly $140 million worldwide – and so an inevitable requel-sequel was soon announced. Now, we know it’s coming sooner than you’d expect.

As confirmed on Twitter, the sixth Scream film – or, the second Scream (2022) film – will come to cinemas on 31 March, 2023. Yes, that’s one year and 13 days away. Behind the camera, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be once again cooking up the slasher scares, along with returning writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. And earlier this week, Courteney Cox seemingly confirmed the return of Gail Weathers, though the rest of the casting remains to be seen. Anyone who’s seen the most recent installment will – SPOILER WARNING – expect to see more from Melissa Barrera’s Sam and Jenna Ortega as her sister Tara, but there has been no official announcements yet.

Speaking to Empire in the Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness issue – on sale now, and available to order online here – Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett opened up about the pressures of following up the fifth film and retaining the all-important surprise factor. “This movie has to be willing to risk it all in order to subvert all of those expectations,” says Gillett. “And we’re so far down the rabbit hole of Scream movies, that it’s all up for grabs at this point.” They’ve got just over a year to figure it out – here’s hoping the results are, well, a scream.
