Scott Derrickson Finds Postmortal

Sinister director Scott Derrickson is a busy man at the moment. He has one project, demonic cop thriller Beware The Night, in front of cameras and plenty of other possible movies waiting in the wings. He’s picked up yet another potential pic, nabbing the film rights to Drew Magary’s **The Postmortal, known over here by the slightly clunkier title The End Specialist.

Magary’s book is set in the near future, where a cure for ageing is discovered and, after much political and moral debate, made available to people worldwide. Immortality, however, comes with its own unique problems, including evil green people, government euthanasia programs, a disturbing new religious cult, and other horrors.

Our hero is John Farrell, a man who decides to take the vastly expensive treatment known as 'the Cure', which means he’s effectively immortal. At least, he’s protected from the ravages of natural ageing, but he can still get sick and die, or be mortally wounded. And what of romance or love when you know you’re going to outlive your partner?

It’s certainly a fascinating, meaty concept; and Derrickson could be the man to explore it on screen. There’s no word on studio backing or other involvement yet, but we’ll be watching this one through development...
