It was only days ago that Morgan Freeman joined Bruce Willis in **Red, and we remarked then that a director wouldn't be far behind. Sure enough, today Robert Schwentke has signed up to direct the thriller, marking something of a change from his most recent film The Time-Traveler's Wife.
Red sees a hitman (Willis) forced out of retirement when an incoming CIA director panics at how much the former operative knows and orders him to be killed. Turns out that's not such a good idea.
Schwentke's long-delayed (apparently by Eric Bana's hair*) adaptation of the Audrey Niffenegger novel is finally due out on August 14. He previously directed Flightplan, and is also developing Conspiracy of Fools, about the collapse of Enron. Expect this one to leapfrog up his To Do list, however.
*He had to shave it for Star Trek, and then they had to wait for it to grow back to shoot some pick-up scenes.
