As the movie's development creeps towards the two-decade mark, the attempt to make a new film based on space-age Flintstones equivalent The Jetsons has taken another turn with a possible director. Sausage Party's Conrad Vernon is now aboard the project for the Warner Animation Group.

The Jetsons – the family comprised dad George, wife Jane, daughter Judy, son Elroy plus pooch Astro and robot Rosie – aired in the 1960s and 1980s and spawned an animated movie in 1990. Since then, various studios have been trying to return the characters to the big screen, with the project evolving between different takes, both animated and live-action. Directors such as Adam Shankman and Robert Rodriguez have taken a crack at the idea to no success.

Now Warners, which is seemingly firmly on an animated track, has Vernon developing the film to direct it. Don't go expecting any lurid orgy scenes or jokes about futuristic waste – despite his last film, Vernon was long a stalwart of DreamWorks Animation and worked on such family friendly fare as the Shrek films (he's also the voice of the Gingerbread Man), Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Monsters Vs. Aliens. There's no date for this one to arrive as it's still bubbling away in a cine-test tube.
