Many of the details about the new Star Trek series that finds Patrick Stewart returning to his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard are still held tightly behind deflector shields. We do at least now know that Santiago Cabrera and Michelle Hurd will be co-starring in the series with Stewart.
Set years after he commanded the Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Picard (or whatever the series ends up being called) will find him on a new adventure, confronting a universe that has changed around him. According to Deadline, Cabrera will play the pilot of Picard’s ship who also is a skillful thief. Hurd is playing a former intelligence officer brilliant analyst with a terrific memory that has not been affected by her drug and alcohol abuse. Certainly not the sort of characters we were used to seeing on TNG.
Current Trek overlord Alex Kurtzman is writing and producing the show alongside James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon and Heather Kadin. Star Trek: Discovery veteran director Hannelle Culpepper will handle the first two episodes.
The series will be shown in the States on streaming service CBS All Access (like Discovery) and deals are being set up to distributed internationally (likely with Netflix, though nothing has been confirmed yet).
