The main unit shooting has now wrapped on Captain Marvel, but the work continues on the film. There will be the typically long post-production process, especially since two of the cast, Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg, will need considerable digital tweaking.

Neither actor has suddenly become vain and decided to add a lot of visual effects make-up for the movie, the trickery is instead because they're playing Nick Fury and Agent Phil Coulson in the 1990s, when Captain Marvel is set. So Marvel, according to boss Kevin Feige, will apply the same de-aging technology it has unleashed upon Michael Douglas and Robert Downey Jr., among others. Unlike the relatively brief sequences in films such as Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War, though, Captain Marvel calls for a lot more.

"Sam Jackson is shooting a movie for us right now where he’s entirely 25 years younger the whole movie," Feige told Slashfilm of the work on the new film. "And Coulson. So that’ll be the first one where it’s a character for the whole movie, as opposed to a glimpse at a certain period of time. It’s the whole movie."

With its 1990s-setting, Captain Marvel poses a few challenges of this magnitude, especially since the villains are the Skrulls, alien creatures who can impersonate anyone. So expect plenty of face-changing.

Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn and Annette Bening are among the cast backing up Larson, and the film, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will be out on 8 March next year.
