You can hardly blame Sam Raimi for wanting to take on a smaller project after directing three Spider-Man movies. We'd park ourselves on a beach somewhere with one of those drinks with an umbrella in it and ban anyone from mentioning the words Peter Parker ever again.
The director will be going back to his genre roots for Drag Me To Hell, a supernatural thriller he wrote with his brother Ivan. The film tells of a recipient of a supernatural curse and was actually written just after Raimi finished making Army of Darkness in 1992.
Rob Tapert, Raimi's partner in Ghost House Pictures and the producer of the movie, told Variety, "Sam calls it a 'spook-a-blast,' a wild ride with all the chills and spills that 'Evil Dead' delivered, without relying on the excessive violence of that film. When one has done three very expensive movies, they get used to eating caviar. Sam will have to ponder what it means to come down from the mountaintop for a moment."
Raimi going back to making horror is awesome news and working on a smaller project should give him time to recharge his batteries for his next big thing – Spider-Man 3 felt like the work of a director running on fumes and with eyes sometimes more focused on the release date than the movie. Whether that next big project is The Hobbit, Spider-Man 4 or something else altogether, we'll have to wait and see.
