Though he told this very site back in March that he made the “very difficult decision” to focus on his theatrical commitments instead of returning to the director’s chair for Bond 24, it appears that Skyfall man – and multiple Empire Award winner – Sam Mendes may have been persuaded to sit back down again.
While no official confirmation has been offered, Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures and MGM are kicking off talks for Mendes to call the shots on Daniel Craig’s next stint as 007.
According to the site, Mendes and Bond producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli have recently started talking about Mendes again, and have decided to wait until he’s ready to work on the next film, which John Logan is writing even now.
Of course, given how eager everyone involved is to capitalise on Skyfall’s success, that might end up being too long for the producers. And there has been plenty of talk about other possibilities including Shane Black, Ang Lee, Tom Hooper, David Yates and, most recently, Nicolas Winding Refn. Naturally, we’d expect the Eon team to consider lots of possibilities, but given Craig’s support for Mendes, don’t be surprised if he does lock down a new deal…
