After a couple of false starts in development (Sam Mendes flirted with the idea of directing, before Dominic Cooke took on the task), the film based on Ian McEwan's 2007 novel On Chesil Beach is now on its way to our screens, starring Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle. The first trailer is online.
The story, which McEwan has himself adapted, chronicles the issues of a newly married couple in the 1962 as they figure out their fears, fumbles and fights when it comes to consummation. Florence (Ronan) is quietly terrified to voice her concerns about her wedding night to Edward (Howie), who is himself worried about his lack of experience with women.
The cast also includes Anne-Marie Duff, Adrian Scarborough, Emily Watson and Samuel West. On Chesil Beach will be out on 15 June.
