Netflix has moved into all kinds of genres in its original series output, but it’s never gone all-out on the kind of British TV crime thriller that the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 do so well. Enter Safe — a distinctly UK-based show about a teenage girl, Jenny, who goes missing despite living in a well-off gated neighborhood. The safety of the area means it’s one of the locals whodunit, and her dad Tom is intent on tracking down the kidnapper — if, indeed, she’s been taken by somebody. Take a look at the first trailer below.
Strangely it’s Dexter and Six Feet Under star Michael C. Hall in the lead role here, putting on an impressively convincing British accent. Anyone who saw him in unorthodox Bowie musical Lazarus will know how brilliantly he can mimic a voice, though it may take some time to get used to Miami’s most sympathetic serial killer sounding like he comes from the south of England. Starring alongside Hall is Amanda Abbington, aka Sherlock’s Mary Watson, as detective sergeant Sophie, and Hustle’s Marc Warren as Tom’s friend Pete.
If you’ve been looking for the new Broadchurch or Doctor Foster, Safe looks like it could be a similarly compelling show — and you can binge the whole thing when it hits Netflix on 10 May. Read more about Safe in Pilot TV{
