He’s been blasting up the screen across the pond recently as the title figure in Grindhouse-birthed splatter thriller Hobo with a Shotgun, but Rutger Hauer is planning to wield a very different type of weapon for Dario Argento’s planned Dracula 3D.
Yes, while ol’ fang face is a seemingly perennial subject for filmmakers, the Dracula story is definitely enjoying a particular resurgence at the moment, what with Jaume Collet-Serra considering Harker and David Slade signing on to make Bram Stoker-inspired horror thriller The Last Voyage of the Demeter, among others.
Horror legend Argento first let the world know about his plans for the Count in Cannes last year, aiming to bring the world a blend of period setting and eye-itching 3D. Hauer, for his part, will be playing obsessed vamp hunter Abraham Van Helsing. The original plan was for Argento to kick off shooting last month, but now it would appear that he’s shifted the schedule back to May. Fingers crossed it pumps new plasma into the filmmaker’s veins – recent efforts, such as Giallo and Mother of Tears, have been decidedly bloodless. And that’s despite the lashings of gore…
