Though we’ve been here before, with directors and actors attached and raving about the idea of bringing the game to life on the big screen, the adaptation of Spy Hunter has remained resolutely stuck in the neutral gear of development. Now Zombieland / Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer thinks he’s the man to get it moving.

According to Vulture, Fleischer has now signed onto direct and produce the film, which will be based on the 1983 arcade classic and its various video game spin-offs.

Spy Hunter has been on the road for nearly a decade now, with the likes of John Woo, Dwayne Johnson and Paul WS Anderson all involved at one point or another. But then, in 2010, Warner Bros. nabbed the rights, engaged Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin to oversee a new take and hired Chad St John to write it.

With Lin having just worked on Gangster Squad with Fleischer, this new wrinkle – assuming it turns into something concrete instead of melting into rumour – makes sense. But can it actually get going this time? Watch this space.
