Still fighting a slightly uphill battle in terms of reactions to it, Marvel's Inhumans is headed to TV screens (in the States at least, so far) in September. The first full trailer for the series offers a few more details on the story.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965, the Inhumans were an outgrowth of experimentation conducted by the alien Kree early on in the Kree-Skrull War that took place millions of years in the past. Creating a station on Uranus, the Kree discovered sentient life on Earth and, intrigued by its genetic potential, began tinkering with us. Although successful, the experiments were abandoned due to a genetic prophecy that foresaw it leading to the demise of the Kree people. The Inhumans survived.
We're introduced to the main characters here – the Royal Family of the Inhumans who live in the advanced city of Attilan, transported to the moon from the Earth to avoid discovery and the growth of pollution as humanity began its rise. Now, concerned with humans' growing reach and threat, there is division between the various family members. Powerful ruler Black Bolt (Anson Mount) – whose voice can level a city – is convinced that they have to stay out of touch, but brother Maximus (Iwan Rheon) would prefer to take Earth back and live in splendor. Caught in the middle is Medusa (Serinda Swan) and when Maximus stages a coup, Black Bolt and some of the others must flee to the planet.
While Marvel at one point had planned to launch the characters into the main movie MCU, we'll have to see how well they work in the more restrictive budget stipulations of a TV series, even one whose first two episodes will enjoy the scope, scale and screenings of IMAX. And did anyone really think that Iwan Rheon wouldn't end up being a dangerous family member? Come on, people!
Marvel's Inhumans will launch its first two episodes on IMAX screens on 1 September before the show kicks off on US network ABC on 29 September. We're still waiting to see if a UK channel will pick the series up.
