Back in October last year, we learned that Amazon, despite already having spent a small fortune on the rights to The Lord Of The Rings to adapt stories outside of those used by Peter Jackson, also had its eye on Robert Jordan's bestselling fantasy novel series The Wheel Of Time. There has been some movement, as Rosamund Pike will star in the eventual show.
Set in an epic world where magic exists but only women can use it, The Wheel Of Time follows Moiraine (Pike), a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a dangerous journey with five young men and women across the world. Moiraine is interested in these five because she believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, who prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it.
Jordan's books span 14 (though 12 onwards were finished posthumously by Brandon Sanderson using his notes and tapes) plus a prequel, so there's material here to keep a series running for a good few years.
Agents Of SHIELD veteran Rafe Judkins is on board to be showrunner for the new series, while Uta Briesewitz is on to launch the show, directing the first two episodes. Pike will next be seen in The Informer, out on 30 August and plays Marie Curie in Radioactive, due next year.
