Rooney Mara Is Lisbeth Salander

And we thought Wayne would always be the most famous Rooney... David Fincher has at last found his Lisbeth Salander - and it's US actress, Rooney Mara. The 24 year-old has ticked all the right boxes for Fincher, and will line up alongside Daniel Craig's Mikael Blomkvist in Fincher's eagerly-awaited adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Mara, who beat pretty much every hot female actress in and out of Hollywood to land the role, has previous with Fincher: she worked with the director on his forthcoming The Social Network (and, from what we've seen so far, she's mightily impressive). Fittingly, news of her casting appeared on Facebook. But you may know her from her recent turn as Nancy in the remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street. She's the younger sister of Kate Mara.

She certainly appears to have the acting chops to pull off the plum role of Salander, the emotionally repressed hacker-cum-Terminator who teams up with Blomkvist to crack a decades-old mystery in Sweden.

It's an extraordinary role, layered and complex, and if Mara can knock it out of the park, she's almost certain to have her face show up in one of those five little on-screen boxes when it comes to the Best Actress category at the 2012 Oscars. Which is the most long-winded way ever of saying she'll almost certainly bag an Oscar nomination.

Mara will, boffo box office permitting of course, reprise the role in two further movies, also based on Stieg Larsson's best-selling trilogy, **The Girl Who Played With Fire **and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest.

Shooting begins on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo next month, in Sweden, with a release date of December 21, 2011.
