A Ghost Story

Some directors (like, say, Joss Whedon) just don't seem content after having finished shooting on one big project and squeeze in something small and more personal in between filming and editing. Case in point? David Lowery, who worked on Pete's Dragon, then gathered his Ain't Them Bodies Saints stars Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck for A Ghost Story. Check out the first trailer...

Mara and Affleck here play M and C, a married couple whose life is suddenly touched by tragedy when he dies. But he comes back as a ghost – white sheet and all – looking to console his bereft wife in their suburban home, only to discover that he's become umoored in time.

Floating passively through the life he knew and watching the woman he loves slip away, the spirit embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history, confronting life's big questions. We're in full-on meditative territory here, but with Lowery's keen ear for characters, he knows how to bring even stories of dead people to life.

A Ghost Story has set a US release date of 7 July, but has yet to announce when it'll float over here.
