Since announcing his intent to write and direct an adaptation of Capcom game title Monster Hunter for cinemas, Resident Evil man Paul WS Anderson has been working away, and he's now in pre-production. With regular collaborator (and better half) Milla Jovovich starring, he's now adding Ron Perlman and Tip "TI" Harris.
Jovovich will be bringing her years of action experience to the role of a woman named Artemis, while Harris is a sniper named Link and Perlman is Admiral, leader of the monster hunting crew.
Beyond the fact that the title is a big clue as to what will happen (and that the game exists), Anderson is keeping the movie's actual plot a secret for now. But as part of the initial announcement, Anderson said the following: "It’s about a normal American who gets dragged into this parallel world, this Monster Hunter world. Then eventually the parallel world ends up coming to our world. So you have the creatures from the Monster Hunter world invading our world. The mythology is that basically monsters are real and all the monsters and creatures from our mythology, whether dragons or the Minotaur, or Chinese dragons, it’s all real. They were real. They really existed in our world. For every monster there was a hero that fought the monster. And then those monsters just disappeared, overnight. They ceased to exist, as did our need for heroes. They became a thing of myth and legend, but eventually the monsters will come back."
With a $60 million budget, the director will have the cameras rolling in South Africa starting next month. Perlman has several films awaiting release, including The Jesuit, Run With The Hunter and new drama Asher. Harris, last seen in Ant-Man And The Wasp, will appear in Netflix's Dolemite Is My Name alongside Eddie Murphy, and The Trap.
