Aside from his vocal and occasional cameo duties in Arrested Development, Ron Howard is more usually found in the film world these days, especially when it comes to directing. He's decided to head back to small screen duty for a new project, though, handling the pilot for new dark comedy military series 68 Whiskey.

Writer/producer Roberto Benabib is adapting an Israeli show called Charlie Golf One into the new series for the Paramount Network, currently happy with the ratings on its Kevin Costner-driven drama Yellowstone.

68 Whiskey (the title phrase refers to a combat medic specialist in the US Army) follows a multicultural mix of men and women deployed as Army medics to a forward operating base in Afghanistan nicknamed The Orphanage. Together, they endure a dangerous and Kafkaesque world that leads to self-destructive appetites, outrageous behavior, intense camaraderie and occasionally, a profound sense of purpose. Sounds a little bit like an updated MASH.

It's still early days for the show, but we'd expect the cameras to roll later this year, and then the network will decide if it wants to move forward from there.
