This week, in news: Rogue One and The BFG get trailers; the new series of Sherlock finishes filming; while Doctor Strange finishes up in style.

Star Wars spin-off teases Roguish charms

Rogue One

Disney’s buyout of Lucasfilm has meant we can expect a new Star Wars film every 12 months. Our latest taste of this new world order came this week with the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the franchise’s first live-action spin-off. Among the teaser’s many bountiful treats: Felicity Jones looking rebellious; Ben Mendelsohn looking regal; the AT-ATs taking a beach holiday; and Canary Wharf tube station making an unexpected cameo.

Fast and Furiosa

Opening up the opportunity for perhaps the most delightfully obvious pun imaginable, Charlize Theron confirmed a long-held rumour by signing up to star in Fast & Furious 8. The Mad Max: Fury Road star will play the villain in the cars-’n’-crazy-stunts sequel – the first Oscar winner to join the franchise. But surely not the last.

Stranger things have happened, will continue to happen...

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first supernatural adventure Doctor Strange wrapped filming last week. Benedict Cumberbatch was papped on the streets of Manhattan in his full Stephen Strange get-up (and popped into a comic book store during his downtime), but a new official image later emerged, with the lure of a trailer on the horizon, too.

Sherlocked and loaded - for the last time?

Elsewhere in Benedict Cumberbatch news, the officially certified World’s Busiest Actor shaved off his Doctor Strange beard and took the first hansom cab home to London, where filming on Sherlock season four began this week. “All roads lead back to Baker Street,” the series creator and showrunner Steven Moffat said, before teasing that this could be the final season of the detective series. The game, perhaps for the last time, is afoot.

The BFG debuts a whizzpopping new trailer

The BFG trailer

Steven Spielberg isn’t gobblefunking around, with multiple projects up his cinematic sleeve: next on the agenda is his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic fable The BFG. The first full trailer arrived this week, giving us our first glimpse of Oscar winner Mark Rylance in the ear-heavy title role. Snozzcumbers all round!
