Getting ready to fight in the Battle: Los Angeles are three new strapping young recruits - Michelle Rodriguez, Michael 'Observe And Report' Pena and Bridget Moynahan - to join the sargeant, played by The Dark Knight's Aaron Eckhart.

The action flick, directed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning helmer Jonathan Liebesman, will assume a sci-fi angle as the new platoon are pitted against aliens invading Los Angeles - making it sound a little like Independence Day crossed with Escape From LA.

Their characters have already been announced, with Rodriguez taking radio control as Crpl. Adriana Santos, Moynahan plays a vet, and Pena is a civilian searching for his son, who is picked up by Eckhart's marine battalion.

Rodriguez is hot property this year as the hype picks up for James Cameron's Avatar, while Pena is keeping things indie with his role in the upcoming psychological thriller from Werner Herzog and David Lynch - My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. Moynahan - best known for her roles in I, Robot and Coyote Ugly - is up next in kid's classic novel adaptation Ramona and Beezus.

Battle: Los Angeles is due in cinemas July 9 2010.
