When Godzilla stomps his way back to the big screen later this year in Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, he’s not coming alone. In Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, the radioactive mega-lizard battled MUTOs – creatures created specifically for the 2014 reboot. But this time, director Michael Dougherty is getting to play with three more beloved toys from Toho’s box of beasts – master monsters Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. It’s going to be an epic royal rumble – and Empire has a brand new image of the pterodactyl-esque Rodan, as seen in the new issue.
“[Rodan] is a bit of a rogue… you never quite know where his loyalties lie,” Dougherty tells Empire of the monster’s role, promising plenty of destruction. “Godzilla’s more of a lumbering, plodding presence; it takes him a couple of days to destroy a city like Tokyo. Rodan can level it without even thinking. He’s this massive A-bomb, so there’s a speed and ferocity he brings.”
