Could The Rock Be Goliath?

Back in January, The Exorcism of Emily Rose writer/director Scott Derrickson stepped aboard the planned new cinematic version of the David and Goliath story, titled simply Goliath. And while it remains floating in development, it would appear that the movie is now creeping closer to reality with producers now talking to Dwayne Johnson about playing the hulking villain of the piece.

It’s early days yet but Twitch reports that Temple Hill team Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen have simply reached out to the head of Team Bring It to consider the role. He certainly fits the bill: you wouldn’t need much CGI to make audiences believe that Johnson was a gigantic, fearsome warrior, who is challenged by a young farm hand to a confrontation. A battle that (spoiler alert!) doesn’t go so well for the bigger bloke.

Given that Godfrey and Bowen have also been heavily involved in the Twilight franchise, no one should be surprised that they also have a particular name at the top of their wish list for David, with word that Taylor Lautner’s agent should expect a phone call with an offer.

Biblical tales are definitely hot at the moment, with Darren Aronofsky also putting the pieces together for his take on Noah’s ship building quest. Goliath may have to wait a little while, though, since Derrickson, who last made The Day the Earth Stood Still, is already busy preparing to start making found footage thriller Sinister with Ethan Hawke in the lead and Johnson is shooting up everything in sight on the set of G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation
