Robert Rodriguez has no shortage of projects on the go, from his current slate of feature films (including **Machete Kills **and next year’s long-awaited Sin City: A Dame To Kill For), a short and at least two TV projects. Now, however, the small screen will get another Rodriguez-spawned show, albeit one that he’ll apparently have no involvement with whatsoever. There may be a mixed reaction, then, to El Mariachi: the series.

Sony, which owns the rights to the movie, is looking to turn the concept – lone wolf warrior-musician battles drug cartels – into a one-hour drama series for the Latin American market. And the company isn’t looking to just dip its toe into this thing: the current plan is to film 70 episodes on location for the first burst of programming.

However, the gang at the Playlist are reporting from a release from Sony that bears no mention of Rodriguez’ name. There’s always a chance he’s too busy with the 1700 other things he has going and won’t ever be directly involved. Either way, Ivan Arana is taking over Carlos Gallardo’s iconic role (one already inherited by Antonio Banderas in Rodriguez’ two follow-ups) and the show will shoot in Mexico.
