With 20th Century Fox aiming to get all of its mutant spin-off projects up and running (except, perhaps, for poor old X-Men Origins: Magneto, which always seems to be the forgotten kid at the back of the class), word has been flying these last few days of some interesting developments regarding the Merc With A Mouth. Thanks to a story that ran in the paper version of Production Weekly, rumours have been rife that Robert Rodriguez has been “offered” the gig directing **Deadpool.
Now the LA Times has done some legwork and discovered that while sources are jibber-jabbering about the man behind Predators and the upcoming Machete, he’s only been sent the script to consider, and nothing has been formally offered at this stage.
And it’s not tough to see their point: while Rodriguez and Fox appear to have developed a healthy working relationship thanks to his overseeing Predators and making Machete, the latter isn’t finished yet and no-one knows how it’ll perform. Plus, he’s still got to earn back some cred after the disappointing openings for Shorts and Grindhouse.
But with Zombieland** writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick having scribbled the latest draft of the script, which is probably sitting on Rodriguez desk right now gathering taco sauce stains, he’s certainly an interesting choice to tackle Deadpool, depending on whether he wants to have anything to do with it.
And any real movement will have to wait until Ryan Reynolds is finished battling evil as Green Lantern before it can move ahead.
What say you? Do you think Rodriguez is a good match for the mouthy mutant?
