Here’s a piece of potential casting news we’re pretty sure no one would have seen coming: according to Deadline, Sundance boss and cinematic legend Robert Redford is in talks to join the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
From the sounds of it, he could be the new Coulson (not that the old Coulson is dead or anything – Coulson lives!), though since he’s apparently considering the role of someone in “senior leadership” at S.H.I.E.L.D., though think a guy equal – or even superior – to Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. And if Marvel keeps to its usual casting plan, there’s a chance he’ll be showing up in other superhero films. RR vs. RDJ? Please let it happen, oh gods of cinema!
Captain America: The Winter Soldier finds our shield-flinging hero (Chris Evans) still struggling with his role in our modern world, and confronting his past when Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) shows up again in a very different form.
Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Emily VanCamp, Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo are all confirmed for the movie, which Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote and Anthony & Joe Russo will direct starting next month. It’ll arrive on April 4, 2014.
Redford will next be seen in political thriller The Company You Keep, which he also produced and directed. It’ll hit our screens on June 7.
