When he’s not clowning around in Fockers entries, Robert De Niro can still pull it out of the bag and show us those chops that made him such an acclaimed actor. From the looks of Paul Weitz’ new film, Being Flynn, he’s back in solidly entertaining drama territory, albeit with a healthy sprinkling of comedy that doesn’t involve Ben Stiller or lie detectors. We’ve been keeping an eye on Being Flyn****n, which, given that it was adapted from Nick Flynn’s memoir Another Bullshit Night In Suck City, we figured might get a title shift before it hit our screens.
Flynn focuses on Paul Dano as the titular young man who works in homeless shelters while also trying to forge a career as a writer. He’s long been estranged from his father Jonathan (De Niro) – a famous novelist, but only in his own head. But when Jonathan shows up at Nick’s job, father and son have to figure out how to put the past behind them and what their relationship should be. Oh, and there’s the small matter of Nick’s dead mother (Julianne Moore) and his burgeoning relationship with Denise (Olivia Thirlby).
**Being Flynn **should be out some time next year, but there’s no set release date yet.
