He may have once been better known as a Brat Packer and movie star, but these days Rob Lowe has had more success on the small screen in the likes of The West Wing and, more recently, Parks And Recreation. He’ll be hoping his telly luck extends to UK dramas, with a job on Sky’s new series Apocalypse Slough.
Promising a vein of dark humour – hopefully to a higher level than the basic pun that makes up the title – Apocalypse Slough finds the Earth preparing for collision with a massive comet that’s set to trigger an extinction level event and wipe out all life on the planet. Cheery, no?
As the comet approaches, an eclectic group of characters heads to a bunker beneath the titular town to watch the end of the world on massive screens. Among those dealing with impending doom is Lowe’s Father Jude, the man who holds the position of Devil’s Advocate (no, it’s nothing to do with the Al Pacino film) at the Vatican. He’ll face his greatest challenge, one that will shake his faith and force him to confront his past.
Beaver Falls writer Iain Hollands is writing the script, with 30 Rock veteran Michael Engler directing. It will be on screens later this year. Film-wise, Lowe most recently worked on Monster Trucks, which will arrive here on May 22.
