The Rite Possesses The US Box Office

Given that it earned $15 million on its first weekend, it’s not really accurate to say that US audiences flocked to priestly exorcism horror drama The Rite. But enough people turned out to watch Anthony Hopkins go OTT vs demons that the movie made it to the top of the box office across the last three days.

Casual sex comedy No Strings Attached fell to second place with $13.6 million (only a 30.5% drop, which director Ivan Reitman will likely be pleased about), but Jason Statham’s latest bullet/bomb/fist fest, The Mechani****c, could only wrangle up a third place launch, taking $11.5 million. That’s pretty much identical to the fourth week haul of The Green Hornet, which fell from second place.

In fifth place, The King’s Speech continued to do well, earning $11.1 million and pushing its US total to $72.2 million. Wonder if it really will earn more should Harvey Weinstein go through with his plan to edit out the F-words and gain a lower rating across the pond?

True Grit was sixth, making $7.6 million, while **The Dilemma **slipped from third to seventh and $5.4 million. Black Swan dropped a couple of places to eighth, but that was still enough to stay above The Fighter, which was ninth with $4 million. And finally, clinging on for dear life as it prepares to sail down through the trapdoor of the top 10, Yogi Bear made $3.1 million for a running total of $92.5 million. We’re sort of hoping that’s not enough for a sequel.
