This late into his career, Ridley Scott remains an utterly prolific filmmaker – and while his next film The Last Duel has had to suspend production midway through due to the Coronavirus, the director is already hard at work setting up an extra project while he waits to complete shooting. After his historical revenge drama, Scott is set to make Gucci, a true-crime film set in the fashion world.
According to THR, Gucci has been nabbed by MGM in a bidding war which saw Netflix attempt to snap up the movie – but Scott is said to be pursuing a full theatrical release. The film will take place around the 1995 murder of Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci, who ran the famed fashion house in the 1980s. And after her breakout screen role in A Star Is Born (hey, don’t forget that she did Machete Kills first), Lady Gaga is in talks to star in the project as Maurizio’s ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani, who was caught up in his murder. Scott is due to direct from a script by Roberto Bentivegna, based on Sara Gay Forden’s book The House Of Gucci: A Sensational Story Of Murder, Madness, Glamour And Greed.
It all sounds pretty enticing – a legendary director, a uber-talented star, and a juicy crime story set in the world of high-fashion. If Scott still has to finish up work on The Last Duel – starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Adam Driver – first, it sounds like he won't be hanging around long before setting to work on Gucci, because MGM has dated the film for 24 November 2021.
