Both Ridley Scott and Steven Knight are people you might think already had enough going on not to need more of a workload. But they're teaming up for a project regardless – World War II-set miniseries Roads To Freedom.
Yes, not content to let Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks monopolize the conflict on screen, the pair is adapting Sir Anthony Beevor's books, with the author co-writing the series. Scott plans to direct the first episode to set the tone for the show, currently configured as 10 episodes.
Roads To Freedom will portray different angles on the war from the usual US/UK-centric focus. It'll explore brutal realities from multiple viewpoints, with characters from Russia, Germany, France and other countries across the globe. That includes women and children struggling to survive. The emphasis is on humanity, the characters bound together by one dramatic story. According to Deadline, some of the storylines will be discomforting, but heroic, and the race between East and West to capture Berlin will shed light on what became the foundations of the Cold War.
There's no channel or company attached yet, but that's surely only a matter of time.
