You may wish to gather the appropriate amount of salt to take with director Richard Donner telling the crew of a tabloid outfit that Goonies 2 is still in the works, but he appears confident that it’ll happen.

Of course, the report – as channelled through The Wrap – carries no official accompaniment from rights holders Warner Bros., and the idea that Donner is trying to make a new Goonies isn’t exactly new. Members of the cast have talked it up in the past, and back when we reunited the actors, Donner and producer Steven Spielberg for our 20th birthday issue (back in 2009, when all of this was fields and you could leave your front door unlocked every night) Donner even said there was no hope of it happening despite years of attempts.

So something appears to have changed his mind. Obviously, studios have been raiding their back catalogues to find titles that could fuel remakes and reboots, so we’d put money on development happening on something to do with The Goonies.

Whether that means we’ll see the surviving members of the original cast, which included Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Ke Quan, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and John Matsuzak, back on screen or whether we’ll have to meet some new Goonies is anyone’s guess.

Right now, we’d caution everyone to hold off on excitement / disgust / whatever until this either becomes more than just a ping on the rumour sonar or actually becomes something real.
