We've know for a while that Disney and Lucasfilm have been planning to expand Star Wars' galaxy far, far away with some animated shorts that shine a light on female characters such as Rey, Jyn Erso and Leia. The first short, Sands Of Jakku, featuring Daisy Ridley voicing Rey, is now online.

Sands takes place in the brief time between Rey meeting BB-8 in The Force Awakens and her running into Finn and heading off into more adventures. She'll have to fend off a dangerous creature that lurks beneath the shifting surface of the planet. Think Dune, but with a slightly different threat.

The other new shorts in the series will premiere between July and the autumn on both Disney's YouTube channel and TV screens, filling in little stories that take place within some of the franchise's biggest films and beyond.

As for the next main Star Wars movie, that would be The Last Jedi, due on 15 December.
