Jennifer Hudson has proven — to Oscar-winning effect – that she has the singing skills to pull off pretty much any performance. And while R&B legend Aretha Franklin is on a whole other level, it sounds from this as though Hudson has reached it. Check out the new trailer for biopic Respect.
From the looks of Respect, it won't exactly break the boundaries in terms of a biopic – charting Franklin's rise from Church choir prodigy to musical icon with some familiar struggles, including with her parents (here played by Forest Whitaker and Audra McDonald), and those who didn't believe in her talent - at least, until she proved them wrong and gained their, yes, we'll say it, respect.
Liesl Tommy is in the director's chair, with Tracey Scott Wilson on script duty and Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Brenda Nicole Moorer, Marlon Wayans and Marc Maron also in the cast. Respect will be in UK cinemas from 10 September.
