Like its undead plague victims, the Resident Evil franchise never seems to quite die. Netflix is at work on a TV adaptation of the horror-centric video game series, but Constantin Film (which is also involved on the small screen project) has an origin story/reboot ploughing ahead, with Kaya Scodelario, Robbie Amell, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia and Neal McDonough aboard to star.
Exact plot details are being kept quiet for now, but it'll be set in 1998 on a fateful night in Raccoon City. Scodelario is playing Claire Redfield, with Amell as Chris Redfield, John-Kamen playing Jill Valentine, Hopper as Albert Wesker, Jogia on to be Leon S. Kennedy and McDonough bringing William Birkin to life, all characters from the games. It's a shift from the Paul WS Anderson/Milla Jovovich years, which was largely focused on Jovovich's Alice.
47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts is on to write the script and make the movie and he seems enthusiastic about what they've dreamed up so far: "With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences," Roberts says in a statement.
Sony Pictures' Screen Gems arm is on to distribute, but there's no word on a release date just yet.
