What with those nasty beggars at the Met Centre forecasting rain for tomorrow, here’s news that will sweep away those incoming storm clouds and lift your heart to new heights: Resident Evil 4 could be on the way.
Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the first episode, and wrote the rest, of the videogame-to-movie trilogy in which his real-life squeeze Milla Jovovich battles zombies, has confirmed to MTV Movies that he’s in talks about a fourth instalment.
“I’m just starting to talk to Sony about it,” Anderson told MTV. “I don’t even know if anything will come of it, but there’s a possibility it might happen.”
Well, the last movie, Russell Mulcahy’s Resident Evil: Extinction made $147 million worldwide, so we’d guess that it’s more than a possibility. Also, the ending – in which Jovovich’s genetically-enhanced warrior, Alice, was cloned and vowing revenge on the evil zombie-producing corporation, Umbrella – certainly left room for a fourth movie. But Anderson says that he hasn’t come up with an idea yet.
“I love the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise and we always try to make the best possible movie we can,” said the Brit director, who’s just finishing work on Death Race, his car smash movie with Jason Statham. “If we could find a good Resident Evil 4 to make, then we would do it. But I wouldn’t just do it for the sake of it, that’s for sure.”
Well, Empire – for one – is hopeful that Anderson finds inspiration from somewhere. Frankly, we have a bit of a soft spot for a trilogy in which every single episode thus far has been given two stars (and, in fact, with brain switched off, each of the movies can be great fun). Can this run continue? Fingers crossed!
