They say that the truth is out there, but we've never found that to be particularly true when it comes to rumours about another X-Files movie. Still, like Fox Mulder, we keep looking, and this weekend it seems that some news may have been forthcoming.
David Duchovny, in the process of promoting his upcoming comedy series Californication, said that he's supposed to see a script this week, from series creator Chris Carter along with co-writer Frank Spotnitz (also a Files veteran) with Carter also set to make his big-screen directorial debut with the film. Duchovny said that both he and Gillian Anderson were ready to reprise their roles.
According to the erstwhile Mulder, the plan is for a 2008 release, which means that things will have to get underway pretty soon. And let's not forget that in the nearly 10 years since The X-Files movie in 1998, there have been rumours galore. Heck, when we spoke to Duchovny for forgotten gender-swap 'comedy' Connie and Carla he mooted the idea of an X-Files musical called Suddenly Scully. Sadly, we're pretty sure he was kidding (although we've got a libretto here just in case, with lots of potential for crossover pop hits).
So while this news is a promising development for all the X-philes out there who haven't transferred their alleigances to Battlestar Galactica or Lost, it's a case of keep watching the skies rather than forming conspiracy theories just yet.
